Reader’s Question:

I own a vintage car here in Pennsylvania. I take good care of my car, and I don’t really use it except when I have to drive it over to a car show. Now, why is my auto insurance rate so high?

Butch

Bethlehem, PA

Hey there, Butch. You did not mention the make and model of your vintage car. I’m thinking of owning and maintaining one here in Pennsylvania, too. Although I do know that owning a vintage car can be hard when it comes to auto insurance premium rates.

We know that auto insurance premiums go up when the driver of the insured car has a very bad driving history. That certainly is one major reason. So, why then is your auto insurance premium rate high when you don’t drive it? Obviously the mileage on that car won’t me much, too. The reason is the expensive repair cost. Vintage cars are expensive to maintain because of the difficulty in getting the parts you need to repair it. Compared to a regular sedan, a contemporary one, repairing it is cheaper because the parts are easier to acquire. Plus some vintage cars need special care when it needs to be repaired. If your car figures in an accident, even a very minor one, the cost of repair is going to be high. Although buying vintage car parts is easier today compared to a few years ago because of the internet, it’s still not as easy as acquiring regular car parts. And if the vintage car you have is very expensive, that is going to bump your auto insurance premium rate higher.

Reader’s Question:

My daughter is in college and is living 60 miles away from my home in Pennsylvania. She comes home only once a month. At home, she doesn’t drive my car. Is it true that I should have her insured at a same rate when she lives in PA with me?

Harry

Bethlehem, PA

Generally speaking, insurance company can include members of the households that operates an insured vehicle. This includes children that are student taking their college degree away from home since that is still their permanent address. This is
to cover the insurance provider’s exposure to events when an injury or damage to property occurs when, in this case your daughter who lives a miles away from your home, may drive your car if she is at home. Insurance companies normally do this since there is a high probability that your daughter will drive your car during her visit if she used to drive your car before she went to college. In this regard, your daughter
should be covered by your policy.

According to the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, the owner of the policy can exclude a household member from
the policy as long as that person can show a proof that he/she has the Assigned Risk Plan or car insurance with another insurance provider. You can ask your insurance company to exclude your daughter. Some companies do this even without the proof so you may also check with your agent if the company’s guidelines allow this.

Reader’s Question:

What does tort coverage mean? Is it an auto insurance requirement here in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA?

Adam

Pittsburgh, PA

Hi Adam! Yes, the Pennsylvania motor vehicle financial responsibility law requires car owners, such as yourself, to secure tort coverage as part of their auto insurance policy. You can actually choose between limited and full tort coverage options. Generally, limited tort coverage costs less but choosing this option means that you are waiving your right to sue for certain damages, including emotional trauma or pain and suffering. Of course, the conditions you’ve waived do not include those identified as exceptions in Section 1705 (d) of Act 6, Title 75 of the Pennsylvania motor vehicle financial responsibility law. Meanwhile, full tort coverage removes any restrictions on your right and ability to file suit against the other party in case you figure in an automobile accident in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA. Clearly, this is why full tort coverage usually increases the cost of your premiums.

I suggest that you enter your zip code in this online form so that you can take advantage of the available free quotes from insurance companies in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA. Take about five so you can get a more comprehensive comparison of features and costs on which you can base your final decision on what type of tort coverage to choose.

Reader’s Question:

I went to the mall here in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA. When I went back to the parking lot, I saw a dent on the front driver’s side area of my car. Someone might have hit my car and didn’t even bother to leave me a note. What should I do?

Lourdes

Pittsburgh, PA

Finding a dent on your car must have been a bummer… But if it is only a small dent, you should probably just let it go without reporting it to your auto insurance. Reporting a small dent to your auto insurance company might result to having your auto insurance premium to increase. In case you don’t already know, filing auto insurance claims on a number of small or minor accidents may result in an increase in your auto insurance premiums.

You may even have to pay auto insurance deductible which can come out to be even higher than the actual repair expenses to your car. So it might be wiser to pay to have the dent in your car fixed rather than filing an auto insurance claim. Then again, if the dent is a large one, and after having it estimated, the expense of having it repaired is definitely higher that your auto insurance deductible, you may want to consider filing an auto insurance claim under the collision coverage part of your auto insurance policy. Also, in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA, you can buy uninsured motorist property damage auto insurance so you can file a claim on that coverage.

If you are still considering buying an auto insurance in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA because of such incident, you can check on this site for free quotes. This will give you idea how much to pay for auto protection such as your case.

Gap Insurance Quotes Online Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA

Reader’s Question:

I have heard of gap insurance. Is this a different kind of auto insurance? Is it available in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA? How much would it cost? Should I get one?

Destiny

Pittsburgh, PA

Whoa, Destiny! Hold it right there! I will try to answer all of your questions, just bear with me on this.

Gap insurance is not a different kind of auto insurance, rather it is another type of coverage that you can add on to your comprehensive insurance. This is particularly useful when you have leased a car, or in the early years when you purchased your car through an auto loan. I’ve explained before that cars naturally depreciate over time due to usage, wear and tear. When you have totaled a car or it was lost, your comprehensive insurance will pay for its actual, depreciated value, and it will be less than what you owe the bank. Gap insurance covers this discrepancy so you don’t have to pay for something you’ve already lost. For leased cars, the situation is the same, except it’s the leasing company that will demand for the full payment (probably because the bank demands for them to do so, as well).

I am very certain that gap insurance is available in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA, Destiny, you just have to look around town. As to how much it would be, that is something that auto insurers in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA will determine based on the usual factors. Why don’t you enter your zip code on the space provided on this page so you can get free quotes from multiple insurers in Pittsburgh?

Kaitlyn

Kaitlyn, let me call your attention to your second to the last question – is it about time to get auto insurance for yourself – and my answer is no. Actually, my answer is no, it’s not time for you to get auto insurance, and it will never be. At the risk of being rude, let me say outright that auto insurance is for automobiles, hence the term. If you are worried about the perils you may be subject to from all your driving, you have two options to consider. First is you should get health insurance that you can carry everywhere you are. Next is you should check if you are listed as an authorized driver by your company and if not, you should ask them to have you listed.

Auto insurance is for automobiles, and one auto insurance policy is intended particularly for specific and specified vehicles. If and when you own a car, that is the time to get auto insurance.
