Reader’s Question

I plan to rent a car in Pennslyvania for the next few months, should I get an auto insurance for the rented car?

Bobby

Allentown, PA

Hello Bobby

Companies that provide car rental in Pennsylvania usually require you to pay for auto insurance immediately when you rent their car. The auto insurance coverage depends on the company but it usually carries with it certain conditions like your agreed time to rent and miles to travel. Nevertheless, they do have available insurance policies which you can readily buy upon rental. In case your car rental company does not provide auto insurance, you may need to buy non-owner auto insurance policy to protect you and the rented car from possible accidents.

Auto insurance is important even when you rent a car so to give you outright answer, yes, you need to get one. Auto insurance policies in car rental companies may include collision coverage, liability insurance and personal accident coverage. The personal accident coverage is used to pay medical bills for you and your passenger should accidents happen.

If these auto insurance is not available in the rent-a-car company or if you frequently rent a car, a non-owner auto insurance would be appropriate. You can buy this from insurance companies in a per year basis. In fact, this will be even cheaper rather than buying auto insurance every time you rent a car. The non-owner auto insurance will provide liability and collision protection for you and the rented car.
